    Dr. Phil Markham

Dr. Phillip Markham was born and raised here in Harlan, IA, he and his twin brother are the youngest of ten children. He graduated from Harlan Community High School and like four of his siblings, turned his interest into a career in health care.

Dr. Markham attended Creighton University receiving his Bachelors degree in 1984 and his Doctorate in Dental Surgery in 1988. After his graduation from dental school, he served as an associate dentist in Cody, Wyoming and Perry, Iowa. He then started his own practice, joining in with Dr. Earl Boltinghouse in Harlan, Iowa in 1990.

In 1993, Dr. Markham purchased the practice of Dr. Boltinghouse, which was the beginning of Markham Family Dental Associates, the only group practice in Harlan. Dr. Boltinghouse was the first of a number of dentists to associate with Dr. Markham since that time.

Dr. Markham believes in keeping his practice staffed with the highest quality talent available and to always have state of the art equipment. All doctors and staff continue to be educated in this every changing and advancing profession to allow them to provide the best treatment options for their patients. Dr. Markham maintains a patient focused dental practice, always keeping the patient’s best interest at the heart of what they do. His practice treats patients of all ages and the entire staff is educated and trained to provide exceptional care in all treatment modalities.

Dr. Markham feels very fortunate and blessed practicing here, and believes it is important to give back to the communities that have supported his practice. He has served on the Chamber of Commerce Board, holding all offices including Chairman, and served as the Chairman of the Chamber office of Economic Development. He is active in his church and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as a member of the Harlan Volunteer Fire Dept. as well as a stint in the Jaycees, a group no longer active in Harlan. Dr. Markham just recently resigned as the Chairman and member of the Shelby County Board of Health after having served for over 30 years.

He also feels it is important to be involved in organized dentistry. He is a member of the Iowa Dental Association, the American Dental Association and the Southwest Iowa District Dental Society. He has held all offices in the Southwest District, has served as the district Trustee to the IDA as well as the district representative on the IDPAC Board. Dr. Marham served two terms on the Creighton University Dental School Alumni Advisory Board as well as the Advisory Board for the Iowa Western Community College Dental Assisting Program. All of this helps to keep him current in the profession of dentistry.

Dr. Markham relishes his time with his wife, Amy and two children, Andrew and Sara. They enjoy both lake life in Okoboji and the mountains whenever possible. Dr. Markham is an avid outdoorsman who loves hunting, fishing, golfing skiing, snowmobiling and spending time horseback.

Dr. Markham attributes the success of Markham Family Dental Associates to maintaining an intelligent and exceptionally talented staff and his practice philosophy which he attributes to his upbringing.

“I grew up in a health care family, my Father was a physician, I have two sister that are nurses, a brother who is a dentist and my twin is a physician. We were raised to be of service. My intention is to treat all patients with the same compassion, diligence and respect that I have treating my family, and I love my family!”

DENTAL HYGIENE TEAM

Dental Hygienists play an important role in our dental office. Markham Family Dental has three hygienists who educate us on our dental needs. They perform several tasks which include:

Perform preventative procedures to remove tartar, stain, and plaque.
Appy sealants and fluoride to protect your teeth.
Take radiographs.
Assess patients’ health and work in conjunction with the dentist for overall patient care.
Document care and treatment plans.
Educate patients about oral hygiene techniques.

Hygienists use several types of equipment, including hand, power and ultrasonic instruments. They also use x-ray machines to scan patients for tooth and jaw problems.

Hygienists also talk with patient one-on-one to discuss good oral hygiene practices, the link between diet and oral health, and how oral health can impact our overall well-being. They may also make recommendations for types of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and floss to use, and demonstrate how to correctly use these products.

Hygienists also work closely with dentists to identify any possible dental issues that may be occurring. They also perform oral cancer screenings and administer local anesthetic injections (numbing). Hygienists are a pivotal part of the dentist office. All three of our hygienists are Registered Dental Hygienists licensed by the Iowa Dental Board.
