Oral Sedation

A prescription medication taken before your appointment. Produces a deeper state of relaxation than nitrous oxide. Most patients are drowsy and have limited memory of the procedure. A driver is required. Appropriate for moderate anxiety, longer appointments, and patients who want to be significantly relaxed without an IV.

IV Sedation

Administered through a vein and designed to produce a deeper level of relaxation. Many patients have little to no memory of the procedure. The medication can be adjusted throughout treatment based on your needs and safety monitoring. A driver is required, and you should not drive for the remainder of the day. IV sedation may be appropriate for severe anxiety, complex procedures, and patients who want less awareness during treatment.

Consultation and Health Review

Our team reviews your medical history, current medications, and any conditions that affect which sedation options are appropriate for you. We confirm the procedure, the sedation level, and what you need to do to prepare for the appointment.

Pre-Appointment Instructions

Oral and IV sedation may require fasting for several hours before the appointment, and you will need a driver arranged in advance. Written instructions are provided at the consultation so you know exactly how to prepare.

Sedation Administration

For oral sedation, medication is taken before treatment according to the instructions provided by our team. For IV sedation, the IV is placed and the medication is adjusted to the appropriate level before the procedure begins.

Procedure

Our team completes the planned treatment while you are sedated. Monitoring equipment tracks your oxygen level, heart rate, and blood pressure throughout. Depending on the sedation level used, many patients feel deeply relaxed and may have little memory of the appointment afterward.

Recovery and Discharge

Both oral sedation and IV sedation require waiting in the office until you are stable, and a driver must take you home. You should rest for the remainder of the day. Our team will give you clear recovery instructions before you leave.
