Frequently Asked Questions
BOOK APPOINTMENTThe American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit by age one or within six months of the first tooth erupting. Early visits are brief and focused on making the experience positive rather than clinical. We check that development is on track, advise parents on cleaning and feeding habits, and start building a baseline so we know what normal looks like for that child. The first visit is about the relationship as much as the teeth.
We schedule family appointments together whenever our schedule allows. Parents and children can often be seen back to back so one trip covers everyone. Call our office when you schedule and ask for a family block so we can plan the timing appropriately.
It is completely normal, and we are experienced with it. We work at the child's pace, explain everything before we do it, and stop whenever the child needs a break. Nitrous oxide is available for children who benefit from extra help relaxing. If your child has had a difficult experience at another practice, let us know when you call so we can plan the appointment accordingly. Most anxious kids leave feeling better about dental care than when they arrived.
Yes. We accept most major PPO dental insurance plans and file claims on your behalf. Most plans cover preventive care including cleanings, exams, and X-rays at 100 percent with no out-of-pocket cost for children and adults. We verify your family's benefits before the appointment so you know what is covered. We do not currently accept Medicaid.
We handle the full range of general, restorative, cosmetic, and surgical dental care in-house. Fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, wisdom teeth removal, dental implants, and sedation for all of the above are all available at our Harlan office. The only cases we refer out are those that genuinely require a specialist level of care beyond our scope. We tell you honestly when that applies.
Most patients should come in every six months for a cleaning and exam. Children, adults with healthy teeth, and stable seniors fit this schedule well. Patients with active gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or certain medical conditions may need to come in every three to four months. We tell you what cadence makes sense for each family member at the appointment rather than defaulting everyone to the same interval.
A pediatric dentist treats only children, typically through their teen years, and has additional training focused on child development. A family dentist treats patients of all ages, including children, and is the right fit for most families who want one practice for everyone. We refer to a pediatric dentist when a child has a complex medical condition, severe anxiety that has not responded to our approach, or needs treatment under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. For routine pediatric care, sealants, fluoride, and most fillings, a family dentist is fully equipped.
Yes. Sealants and fluoride treatments are part of our standard preventive care for children. Sealants are typically placed on the chewing surfaces of permanent molars as they erupt, usually around age six and again around age twelve. Fluoride is applied at the cleaning appointment based on cavity risk. Most insurance plans cover both at no out-of-pocket cost for children.
