Your First Visit Starts Here

We take the time to understand you before we start. Here is what to expect and how to make the most of your first appointment.

Care That Begins Before Treatment

We take the time to understand you, your history, your goals, and your concerns before treatment begins. Your first visit is designed to give our team a clear picture and help you understand where things stand and what the path forward may look like.

The Full Picture, Step by Step

Here is what to expect during your first appointment at Markham Family Dental Associates.
Welcome and Check-In
Our front desk greets you and confirms your forms and insurance information. Plan to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for your first visit. If you have not completed your forms online, we set aside time to do this when you arrive.
Medical and Dental History
One of our team members reviews your completed health history with you before the clinical exam begins. This conversation covers medications, past dental experiences, any anxiety you have, and what specifically brought you in today. Nothing is reviewed unless it is relevant to your care.
Comprehensive Oral Exam
Your dentist performs a thorough clinical examination of your teeth, gums, bite, jaw, and soft tissues. This may include checking for decay, assessing gum pocket depths, evaluating existing restorations, and a visual oral cancer screening. Important findings are documented and reviewed with you.
Digital X-rays and Imaging
Current digital X-rays may be taken when needed to give our team information the clinical exam alone cannot provide. X-rays can reveal decay between teeth, bone levels, root conditions, and the status of existing restorations. Digital X-rays use less radiation than traditional film and can be viewed chairside within seconds.
Findings and Treatment Discussion
Your dentist walks through the important findings with you using X-rays and clinical images when available. Recommendations are explained before treatment is planned. If treatment is needed, we review what it is, why it is recommended, the estimated cost, and what may happen if it is not addressed.
Your Personalized Care Plan
Before you leave, our team puts together a prioritized care plan based on what was found. Urgent needs are flagged clearly. Optional or elective treatment is identified separately. You decide the timeline and the starting point. Our job is to give you the information. The decision is always yours.
